Hello, reader, welcome to Otaku Ramen! In this first post, I will talk about the anime I recently finished, "Girlfriend, Girlfriend" (Kanojo mo Kanojo in Japanese), officially available on Crunchyroll.
As a romantic comedy and harem anime, we follow the protagonist Naoya Mukai, who is dating his childhood friend, Saki, whom he has been in love with since childhood and has always declared his love to. Naoya couldn't be happier, as he is now in a relationship with the beautiful girl he has always loved. However, he is surprised on the school rooftop when Nagisa Minase, a student in his class who rarely attends, confesses her feelings to him.
An important note is that, according to Nagisa, she planned this moment for 3 months, and he had never seen her before, which surprised me with its swiftness. Nevertheless, even though he is already in a relationship, Naoya cannot refuse the request of the lovely young girl, and then, along with her, he insists to Saki that the relationship becomes a threesome (and she accepts).
From these events, the story of Girlfriend, Girlfriend unfolds, with this unconventional relationship. It's one surprise after another and many humorous moments—I found myself smiling in various episodes, starting with Naoya inviting both girls to live with him, with Saki living in the house next door. The interaction between the three is funny to follow. Here are some highlights:
- Nagisa is the one who cooks and prepares food that both of them love (and all of it looks very appealing).
- Saki usually just eats and relaxes.
And don't think this relationship is entirely harmonious; many times there is a certain insecurity, especially on Saki's part, who feels inferior to Nagisa because she does the housework and has a more attractive body (she constantly mentions Nagisa's breast size). Taking advantage of this, one of the strengths of Girlfriend, Girlfriend is its adult jokes, many of them sexual. These topics bring moments that can make you feel secondhand embarrassment, but it's enjoyable to watch (with headphones).
About the characters, the one that stands out throughout the work is Nagisa. There is a whole development throughout the episodes, showing more about the character's past and the reason for the strong love she feels for Mukai. She made a great effort, learned to cook, worked, all for her great love.
On the other hand, we have Saki, Naoya's main girlfriend. Insecure and stressed, Saki is a character much inferior to Nagisa, but her insecurities and issues are very human.
As for the protagonist, Naoya has his strengths and negatives. On the one hand, Mukai is hardworking, but on the other hand, he is impulsive and even a bit foolish, which creates comical or irritating moments.
Leaving the couple, there is still a character to be highlighted, Mituber Mirika. After having her identity discovered by the protagonists, Mirika convinces herself that she will make Naoya fall in love with her, until she herself ends up falling in love with him.
Comedy, romance (there's even a kiss), and harem, you can follow all of this in the 12 episodes of Girlfriend, Girlfriend. Packed with adult jokes, the anime is fun but has its negative points, such as some personality traits of the protagonists.
Worth checking out!
Final rating: 7.5/10.0.
